Volvo's new flagship SUV revealed, Volvo EX90

As a luxury SUV, the appearance of the interior and intelligent configuration are sufficient

Last month, Volvo officially released its first all-electric model with the new EX name - Volvo EX90, and announced that it will launch at least one all-electric model every year from 2023, opening a new chapter in the new energy market. So, how is the strength of this SUV, which has been positioned in the flagship market since its inception? We have a preview of the future.

The illuminated brand logo is still in Scandinavian style, except that it is now not matched with the straight waterfall center grille, but is directly embedded in the body panel. The headlamp is still the familiar Thor's hammer, but it now has a split crossover connection by way of a light-band layout, a change of sorts on the purely electric model.

As a luxury SUV, the appearance of the interior and intelligent configuration are sufficient

Volvo EX90's body length, width and height are 5037mm/1964mm/1747mm, while the body wheelbase reaches 2985mm, which overall still maintains similar specifications as Volvo XC90, with only a +84mm stretch in length. Of course, we can see some adjustments belonging to electrification on the Volvo EX90, not only the hidden electric door handles, low wind resistance wheels, brake lights that fit on top of the rear windshield, tail lights that run through the trim, etc., are all design optimizations at once.

The cabin of the Volvo EX90 is significantly simplified, with many environmentally friendly materials used from the seats to the door panels, which Volvo calls "plant leather", while metal trim, wood grain trim, etc. are all present on the various fascias. The Volvo EX90 also has a capacitive touchscreen steering wheel, a separate knob for the gearshift mechanism, and a wireless charging pad in the front section.

The 14.5-inch touch screen will be matched with suspended full LCD instruments, they will continue to be equipped with the native Android in-car operating system developed by Google, while its now also loaded with Qualcomm Snapdragon 8155 chip and supported by 5G network, car networking and other technical support, which makes including real-time navigation, Android Auto/Apple CarPlay cell phone interconnection, intelligent voice control, cell phone APP remote car control The car interface is very similar to a smartphone, and it will be easier to get started than BBA' s self-developed system.

With Luminar Lidar in the roof structure and up to 32 internal and external sensing hardware available for the whole vehicle, along with Orin intelligent driving chip from NVIDIA, Volvo EX90 not only achieves L2 level assisted driving through PilotAssist, but also becomes a flagship SUV that can achieve L3 level autonomous driving. The L3 level of Volvo EX90 will come earlier, or whether it will become a new standard among traditional luxury car brands, will be a major point of interest after its launch.

Volvo EX90s Performance may be better than BBA

Other configurations, Volvo EX90 can also be matched with BAUER WEGEN audio system, which will be synchronized to cover the seat headrests, while the dual cameras in the cabin will bring DUS driver sensing system to monitor the driver's status, and even automatically turn on the car's safety takeover to enhance the comprehensive safety of dynamic driving with the car.

In terms of triboelectricity, the Volvo EX90 gets dual-motor four-wheel drive through the SPA2 platform, which will be offered in two different power versions, of which the low-power model will provide 407Ps of maximum power and 770N-m of maximum torque, while the high-power model will be upgraded to 503Ps and 910N-m, while more data on performance is yet to be further disclosed. In addition, the same specification of the battery pack on different power versions can bring the vehicle a pure electric range of 467km or 600km. In addition, the Volvo EX90 will also support two-way charging in the future, providing additional support for multi-purpose use and outdoor use.

To conclude

The debut of Volvo EX90 shows Volvo's attitude in the direction of electrification, perhaps a little slower than BBA' s actions, but its long-standing technical development capabilities are still undeniable. Of course, this is after all a Volvo, than the three electric ability, perhaps its intelligent driving assistance, intelligent cockpit ability will be more expected.
