NETA Announces Tiangong Battery: No Fire for Runaway Monoblocks; Follow-up Support for CTC

NETA Announces Tiangong Battery: No Fire for Runaway Monoblocks; Follow-up Support for CTC

These days, electric car companies are embarrassed to be in the market without some black battery technology.

NETA, a recent star performer among the new car-making forces, is certainly no exception. NETA, which loves traditional Chinese culture, has launched the "Tian Gong Battery". The name is taken from the Ming Dynasty's ancient book "Tian Gong Kai Wu", which means "Things are born from birth, and work is opened to people."

On May 30, NETA Motors held an online Netalks battery technology briefing to introduce the technology and features of the Tiangong battery in detail.

What sets NETA's Tiangong battery system apart is that, in addition to safety, there is more algorithmic involvement.

The Tiangong battery system has three main features: in terms of safety, it focuses on thermal insulation, flame retardant, and electrical protection; in terms of thermal management, it has a constant temperature thermal management system; and in terms of total battery lifecycle management, it adopts forward-thinking to close the loop of battery management. In order to achieve safety, efficiency, and energy-saving.

In addition, in terms of cutting-edge technology, NETA also revealed that its next-generation (third-generation) Tiangong battery system uses CTB/CTC technology and has a reserve of skid plate chassis technology, both of which will be announced in the near future.

This technology will now be applied to the NETA S model that will be unveiled at the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Auto Show.

With this technology, the NETA S has a range of 715 km for the pure electric version of CLTC and 300 km for the extended range vehicle. Of course, the NETA S is currently announced in a 2WD version, with a slight range difference from the 4WD version.

Design: Balancing safety and high specific energy

To achieve battery pack safety, it is necessary to block spontaneous combustion of the battery cells, and car and battery companies generally use a combination of blocking and sparing methods.

According to Zhang Honglei, NETA's assistant president and executive vice president of the Automotive Engineering Research Institute, NETA's Tiangong battery system is designed in three ways: a "devil's advocate" battery cell evaluation system, a grid-based module design, and a dense compartment battery pack design.

First, NETA has established over 900 battery cell selection and evaluation requirements, including over 400 performance evaluation requirements, over 400 simulation development and strategy algorithm parameter evaluations, over 20 safety evaluations, over 30 mechanical reliability evaluations, electrochemical data evaluations, and thermal performance optimization and verification. Accordingly, NETA Motors strictly screens the electric cores.

According to Zhang Honglei, NETA uses high-temperature-resistant materials, built-in short-circuit fuse protection, self-opening pressure relief explosion-proof valves, and high levels of pole insulation for the protection of the single cell.

NETA's modular design is a combination of core-to-module-to-package simulation with C and Tsinghua University to create a modular structure that takes into account both core insulation and high-specific performance.

NETA uses aerospace-grade flame retardant materials between the cells, with insulation temperatures above 1000°C. The electrical protection is military-grade, with insulation redundancy design above 800V, short-circuit redundancy design, and module-level short-circuit redundancy safety design; the compartmentalized structure is protected with a lightweight, high-strength aluminum frame of this type, forming a highly integrated large module structure that resists expansion above 2000N.

In terms of structure, the Tiangong battery also has to achieve high integration and is lightweight. The battery pack uses an ultra-light composite top cover and a highly integrated, double-sealed lower case. In terms of thermal management, NETA's thinking is relatively conventional in terms of thermoelectric separation, directional thermal evacuation, and high-temperature insulation.

However, in terms of thermal management, the Tiangong battery system is not only safe but also efficient and energy-saving.

Thermal management: main focus on intelligence, high efficiency, and constant temperature

The thermal management of the Tiangong battery system is a customized babysitting thermostat management strategy, which can be customized from knowing hot and cold, predicting hot and cold, private customization, full-time domain, full geographical thermostat control, which can bring fast charging experience and long-lasting range.

For example, for the winter range, NETA uses a heat pump thermal management system that increases the range by 20% in winter and consumes better energy than the traditional PTC heating method.

Tiangong's battery thermal management can do the following four things.

First, intelligent feed-forward thermal management, to develop control strategies at the front end. For example, according to the temperature of the battery, driving conditions, etc., the calculation is accurate to the watt level, and the most cost-effective mode is selected to save energy consumption.

Second, is the intelligent driving heating function. NETA uses a heat pump thermal management system for multi-heat source driving heating/insulation, allowing the vehicle to increase its range by 20% in winter.

NETA is the first vehicle manufacturer in China to introduce an energy basin management control strategy that allocates energy consumption based on big data information on the map, such as how much is going uphill and downhill. The distance from the AB point also makes it possible to know at what time heating is most appropriate, contributing to a significant increase in range.

Thirdly, efficient cooling and heating system. Through constant temperature liquid cooling, the battery 15-45 ℃ constant temperature state accounted for 95%, the heating rate of temperature rise also reached 0.8 degrees per minute, and is now close to the level of 1 degree. High-temperature charging efficiency is increased by 8%, and the low-temperature charging efficiency is increased by 10%.

Fourth, is the intelligent and bookable insulation function. NETA has added some algorithms to the cell phone APP, such as the ability to do some pre-heating and insulation through the cell phone APP before going out, so that the battery life is more secure in cold weather.

3

Full lifecycle management: forward-looking closed-loop management

NETA adopts a forward-thinking approach to battery lifecycle management: through big data analysis, we can dig deeper into outliers and other potential failures. NETA uses remote diagnostics and convenient operation and maintenance to achieve closed-loop lifecycle management.

Specifically, NETA has the algorithm capability to make customized features for customers through user profiling and the development of one-vehicle-per-person policies, as well as to do energy-wise management and battery safety monitoring.

To achieve these capabilities, strong algorithms are required. This part of the capability is inseparable from NETA's partners - 360 and Ningde Times. "The partnership with 360 provides NETA with user big data and cloud capabilities and empowers information security. Ningde Times, as a key shareholder, provides NETA with the preliminary battery experimental data and production data; combined with the whole vehicle data and driving data from NETA to create the whole closed loop." Zhang Honglei said.

NETA's algorithms can cover the full range of scenarios - driving, charging, and stationary multiple scenarios.

This data is compared with laboratory data on battery design to analyze issues like lithium precipitation, impurities, micro-short circuits, software, and other issues for advance warning.

Of course, this system can also estimate the final remaining value of the battery.

As of now, the Tiangong battery system is still in the second stage, which is the custom large module stage. NETA will soon start the third stage, which will be the highly integrated CTC stage in 2023.

In addition, NETA has revealed that its CTC with Ningde Times has been frozen in engineering and dozens of prototype vehicles have been made. They will upgrade the "Shanhai platform" at the end of next year and will select a base for the process upgrade later.
